May 1989

Going through old pictures Mom has accumulated over the years. I am scanning family pictures. I am in the 1980’s boxes now.

Thought this was a great picture. May 1989. 34 years ago. Mom would be 51 years old. Obviously Cindy’s wedding.

Left to right: Mom, Barbie, Dottie, Barbie’s daughter Jennifer and her son Eric, Cindy, Bettie and Grandma D.

Our old house on Eulalie readied for demolition.  Asbestos shingles were removed last week. The house was built in 1920.

The first owners were John and Mabel Ludeman.  He was an automobile chauffeur for E.H. Simmons at Hanley and Clayton. They lived there in the 1920’s.

The owner previous to our family was Max and Selma Adolphs. They moved into the house around 1946.  He worked for Western Electric.  He was a German immigrant who came to the U.S. in 1931. Max died of a heart attack at St Mary’s Hospital on 3 May 1959.  His doctor was Clifford Bockelman.

Richard Fitzgerald/Joanna Riordan

Now we go to our great-great-great grandparents (3 great grandparents).  We have 32.

Richard FITZGERALD was born about 1811 in Ireland.  I believe he was born in Boherbue, Cork, Ireland.  I believe means that I have seen information online, but I cannot verify said information.  Therefore, it may or may not be true.  He married Joanna Riordan in 1835.  They had Their kids were:

David Richard- b 1835, our great-great grandfather.

Richard – b 1841, d-1899 in St Louis. He married Mary Ann Donegan.

Charles – b abt. 1843

Richard died in 1884.

Joanna Hanna RIORDAN was born in 1819 in Cork County, Ireland.  We do not know when she died, but we assume she has.

As of today, I do not have the Fitzgerald line past Richard.  Hopefully someday.  So for those keeping score, the line goes: Richard (b 1811), David (b 1835), Richard (b 1882), David (b 1903), Dad (b 1935).

David R Fitzgerald/Mary W Shannon

Now we go to our great-great grandparents.

David Richard Fitzgerald was born in 1835 at Newmarket Parish, County Cork, Ireland.  Not sure when he came to the US, but it was likely in the early 1860’s.  He was  a stone mason.  He married Mary Shannon.  They had eight kids: Johanna (1868), Mary Jane (1872), Anna (1873), Kate (1874), Andrew David (1875), Honora (1877), Richard James (1882) and Charles Francis (1883).  They lived on Division Street in the old Kerry Patch, a few blocks from St Bridget of Erin Catholic Church.  David died 29 January 1891 from bronchitis. He was 56 years old. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery (Sec 011, Lot 0805).

Mary Winifred Shannon was born 15 Mar 1853 in County Mayo, Ireland.  She came to the US in 1862. It appears she was 15 years old when she had their first child, and by age 30, she had eight kids.  The Irish were never known for exact date records, however, her date of birth is probably close to accurate.  David R died in January 1891.  Mary remarried James McCoy 15 Aug 1891. Mary still lived on Division Street when she died 29 May 1913. She was 60 years old. She is buried with David at Calvary Cemetery.

Kids:

Johanna (Annie) married James Crowley in 1885.  She died in St Louis in 1955.

Kate married Edward Donnelly. She died in St Louis in 1922.

Andrew died in St Louis in 1909.

Honora married Thomas J Roche.  She died in Oklahoma in 1943.

Charles Francis married Helen Connors.  He died in St Louis in 1949.

Richard James is our great-grandfather.

Rose M Clark

Our great-grandmother Rose Mary Clark was born 19 Jan 1884 in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Not sure how she made it to St Louis, but she is in the 1900 census at 1929 Carr Street.  She is listed as a servant.

She married Richard Fitzgerald 12 Jun 1902 in Clayton.  He died in 1935.

In 1936, Rose obtained her social security number.  She lived at 2577 Warren.  She was employed by Mermod Jaccard King at 10th and Locust.

Rose died 20 Apr 1967. She was 83 years old.  She is buried at Calvary Cemetery with her husband and family.

Richard James Fitzgerald

Now we go to the great-grandparents.

Richard James Fitzgerald, born 19 Jan 1882 in St Louis.  He lived at 2313 Division St.  He was baptized at St Bridget of Erin Catholic Church on 1 Feb 1882.

He married Rose Clark on 12 Jun 1902 in Clayton.  In 1910, they lived at 2229 Eugenia, right behind present day Union Station. In 1920, they lived at 2221A Madison St.  In 1935, when he died, he lived at 2577A Warren.  Every place they lived, they rented.

Their children were: David R (Dad’s father), Rose M. and Margaret M.

His occupation was an “edge setter” at a shoe factory.  As you know, an edge setter is the person who shapes the edges of heel lifts and shoe soles.

He died 9 Jul 1935.  53 years old.  He is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Section 025, Lot 677.

I have pictures of all of our great-grandparents, except Richard and Rose.  Have to work on that.
