John was a farmer.  He was a soldier in the Civil War.  He was a Private in the 2nd Regiment, Missouri Light Artillery.  After the war, he married Justina Reiminger on 15 Sept 1868 at St Lawrence Catholic Church in New Hamburg, MO.  They had four kids:

Catherine (b 1870) our great-grandmother

Jacob P. (b-1872) married Mary Agatha Scherer

Justina died in 1879 and John remarried Sophia Bossenmeier 27 Jan 1880.  He and Sophia had nine kids: Charles (1880), Philomena (1882), Andrew (1884), Caroline (1885), Anna (1888), Louis (1890), Albert (1892), Henry (1895) and Benjamin (1899).

As you can imagine, with all of these kids, the Blattel name is still quite common in southeast Missouri.  John Blattel donated the ground for St Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso, MO, where many future Blattel’s were baptized, married and laid to rest.

John Blattel died 31 Aug 1926 in Kelso, MO. He was 81 years old. He is buried at St Augustine Cemetery next to the church.
