Joseph Jacques PAYANT was born 19 Feb 1700 in Quebec, Canada. He married Marie Legris on 2 Nov 1721 at Notre Dame Church.
They lived in a house on Rue St Flavien, near the St Lawrence River, in Quebec City. He was a blacksmith.
They had ten children:
Louis-Joseph – b, 1722
Dominique – b, 1724

Pierre-Francois – b, 1729
Jean-Marie – b, 1730
Marie-Angelique – b, 1732

In the 1740’s, the Payant family moved to the Richelieu valley. The Richelieu River runs from Lake Champlain to the St Lawrence River.
Joseph Payant owned a ship and some smaller boats. He captained the ship, which was used to transport troops and military provisions on the Richelieu River and Lake Champlain during the French and Indian Wars, between 1756 and 1760. Due to his superior skills on the water he was nicknamed the “Admiral of Lake Champlain“. In August 1760, Payant’s ship was involved in a military defeat at the hands of the British. At 60 years old, Payant decided to retire from navigating the Lake Champlain.
Another 6GG, William Woodford, fought for the State of Connecticut, in the French-Indian War. Interesting we had relatives on both sides.
Joseph died in 1777, in LaPrairie, Quebec. He was 74 years old.
Marie Jeanne Genevieve LEGRIS was born 18 Mar 1699 in Quebec. She died 2 Mar 1753 in Quebec. She was 53 years old.
